No mandatory vaccinations are required for your Indonesian surf
trip, however we do strongly recommend you consult your doctor or
travel centre for suitable medications, prescriptions and
provisions appropriate for you and specific to the area you are
visiting.
The Mentawai Islands have had cases of recorded Malaria so it is
worth checking with your local doctor or travel vaccination centre
to discuss your medication options.
The Travel Doctor service in Australia is a
good place to gain information on what vaccinations you might need
for the Mentawai's.

Malaria
Summary of a document prepared by Mr Jess Ponting PHD
for OMI
Overstatement by budget tour operators and the surf media has
resulted in raising perceived levels of malaria infection in the
Mentawai Islands.
This is completely beyond the real level of actual risk.
Scientific evidence suggests that carefully constructed and
integrated malaria control programs practically eliminate this
uncertainty. In reducing malarial risk the OMI project team have
access to the considerable resources of the following international
organisations:
- The World Health Organisation
- United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation
(UNESCO)
- New Zealand Government Aid Support Scheme
- Asian Development Assistance Fund
- Indonesian Malaria Control Board
- Surf Aid International NGO funded by the New Zealand and
Australian governments, multinational surf industry corporations,
ABN-Amro and many other corporations and thousands of
individuals.
- Mentawai Health Department (Pemerintah Kabupaten Kepulauan
Mentawai)
- Yayasan Kirekat Mentawai primary health care NGO
